Program Overview

Central service technicians, also called sterile processing technicians, are responsible for ensuring that every reusable instrument and device used in surgery and patient care is clean, functional, and sterile. They support the operating room, emergency department, and clinics by processing instruments, managing inventory, and documenting each step for safety and compliance.

The CRCST program at Collins combines:

  • Classroom instruction in central service operations, infection prevention, and quality control
  • Hands-on instrumentation lab focused on identifying, inspecting, and assembling surgical instruments.
  • A 400-hour clinical practicum in a hospital Sterile Processing Department, aligned with HSPA’s experience requirements for CRCST certification

By the end of the program, you will be ready for entry-level employment as a central service/sterile processing technician and prepared to apply for the CRCST certification exam through HSPA.

Why This Program Matters

Local healthcare employers, including hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and specialty clinics, specifically requested this program due to an immediate and persistent shortage of certified sterile processing technicians.

Regional partners report consistent openings for staff trained to:

  • Decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments
  • Maintain complex instrument sets for operating rooms
  • Follow HSPA standards and hospital quality requirements
  • Support growing surgical volume and new clinical service lines

By building this program in direct response to employer demand, Collins Career Technical Center offers students a training pathway that aligns with real workforce needs and leads to high-demand entry-level roles across the region.

What Does a Central Service Technician Do?

  • Operate and monitor sterilizers (such as autoclaves) and document cycle results

  • Manage sterile storage areas, rotate stock, and check expiration dates
  • Distribute sterile supplies and instruments to the operating room and other patient care areas
  • Follow strict infection prevention, safety, and professional practice standards to protect patients and staff
