Ohio 36-Hour Volunteer Firefighter Course


Program Overview

The Volunteer Firefighter certification is the minimum level of certification required to provide firefighting services in the State of Ohio.

This 36-hour course is an introductory, awareness-level training program designed to prepare individuals to assist with firefighting support operations under the supervision of a fire department.

This certification is specific to the State of Ohio and does not meet the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.


What This Course Provides

Students who successfully complete this State of Ohio Certified Volunteer Firefighter Course will:

  • Learn fundamental fireground safety principles
  • Understand basic fire department organization and operations
  • Develop knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to assist in support-level firefighting functions
  • Build a foundation for future fire service training

This course is intended to serve as a starting point for individuals beginning a career or volunteer service in the fire service.


Course Structure

  • Total Hours: 36 hours
  • Level: Awareness-level training
  • Delivery: Provided by CCTC Instructors (an Ohio Chartered Fire Training Program)
  • Certification: State of Ohio Volunteer Firefighter Certificate

Prerequisites

To enroll in the Ohio 36-Hour Volunteer Firefighter Course, students must complete the following FEMA Independent Study courses:

  • IS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS 100)
  • IS-700: National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction

Proof of successful completion must be submitted prior to or at the start of class.

These courses are available online through FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI).
