Program Overview

The Paramedic Program at Collins Career Technical Center prepares students to perform at the highest level of prehospital emergency care. Paramedics are trained to assess, stabilize, and treat critically ill and injured patients using advanced life support (ALS) procedures, medications, and technologies.

This 1004-hour program is structured for working EMS professionals, with evening classes twice per week, complemented by clinical rotations and field internships that align with NREMT and Ohio Paramedic standards.

Students develop competency in advanced airway management, cardiac care, pediatric and geriatric emergencies, trauma management, pharmacology, and out-of-hospital medical decision-making. The curriculum integrates classroom instruction, high-fidelity simulation, hands-on skill development, and real-world field experience.

Graduates are prepared to test for the National Registry Paramedic certification, pursue Ohio Paramedic licensure, and earn multiple AHA and NAEMT specialty certifications valued by employers across the region.

Why This Program Matters

Our region’s EMS agencies, hospitals, and fire departments have identified a critical shortage of licensed paramedics. Many organizations specifically requested the reopening of this program to meet immediate staffing needs and support community safety.

Our Paramedic Program was built in direct response to that demand. Students gain advanced training that local employers are actively seeking, positioning graduates for fast employment and long-term career growth in emergency medical services.

What Do Paramedics Do?

Paramedics provide advanced emergency medical care in prehospital and transport environments. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Performing advanced airway management (intubation, supraglottic devices, ventilator support)
  • Administering emergency medications
  • Cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, pacing, and 12-lead ECG interpretation
  • Managing traumatic injuries, including hemorrhage control & immobilization
  • Treating respiratory, cardiac, neurologic, pediatric, and obstetric emergencies
  • Operating in high-stress, unpredictable environments
  • Working alongside fire departments, EMS agencies, hospitals, and specialty transport teams
