Electricity

The Electricity program for individuals interested in becoming electricians. This program trains students to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, as well as to use the tools, equipment, and technology necessary to complete the work. The curriculum covers electrical theory, wiring methods, motors and generators, lighting and distribution systems, and more. The program is full-time and typically takes nine months to complete. Upon completing the program, students will have the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the electrical trade industry. Job growth for electricians is projected to be much faster than average for all occupations.

The Electricity Program prepares students for entry-level employment for residential contractors, industrial/commercial construction, and maintenance. Students can certify through the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) and OSHA.

Electricians typically do the following:

• Read blueprints or technical diagrams
• Install and maintain wiring, control, and lighting systems
• Inspect electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers
• Identify electrical problems using a variety of testing devices
• Repair or replace wiring, equipment, or fixtures using handtools and power tools
• Follow state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code
• Direct and train workers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring or equipment
