Program Overview

The Collins Career Technical Center in Ohio offers an Automotive Mechanics program for individuals interested in becoming automotive technicians. This program trains students in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of vehicles, as well as the use of tools, equipment, and technology necessary to complete the work. The curriculum covers engine systems, electrical systems, steering and suspension systems, brakes, transmissions, and more. The program is full-time and typically takes nine months to complete. Upon completing the program, students will have the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the automotive repair industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for automotive service technicians and mechanics was $46,880 in May 2021. Job growth for automotive service technicians and mechanics is projected to be average for all occupations.


What do Auto Mechanics do?

Automotive service technicians and mechanics typically do the following:

  • Identify problems, often by using computerized diagnostic equipment
  • Plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience
  • Test parts and systems to ensure that they work properly
  • Follow checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined
  • Perform basic care and maintenance, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, and rotating tires
  • Repair or replace worn parts, such as brake pads, wheel bearings, and sensors
  • Perform repairs to manufacturer and customer specifications
  • Explain automotive problems and repairs to clients
