Program Overview
The Collins Career Technical Center in Ohio offers an Advanced Cosmetology program for individuals interested in becoming licensed cosmetologists. This program trains students in all aspects of the beauty industry, including hair care, skin care, nail care, makeup application, and salon management. The curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, hair cutting and styling, color and chemical services, facials, manicures and pedicures, and more. The program is full-time and typically takes ten months to complete. Upon completing the program, students can take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensing examination to become licensed cosmetologists. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for cosmetologists was $29,680 in May 2021. Job growth for cosmetologists is projected to be much faster than average for all occupations.
What do Cosmetologists do?
Cosmetologists typically do the following:
- Inspect and analyze hair, scalp, and skin to recommend services or treatment
- Discuss hairstyle options
- Shampoo, color, lighten, and condition hair
- Chemically change hair texture
- Cut, dry, and style hair
- Trim facial hair
- Receive payments from client
- Clean and disinfect all tools and work areas
- Follow infection control and safety procedures
