Practical Nursing

Program Objectives

Collins Career Technical Center is committed to providing excellence in nursing education. Since the nursing faculty believe learning is a dynamic, lifelong process, the curriculum emphasizes the need for continued growth in one's nursing practice. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to pursue a career in practical nursing while building a foundation to enable them to continue their education. The faculty utilizes a blend of theory based on evidence-based practice with hands-on experiences to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist in the promotion of health and wellness to individuals, families, and the community.

Program Goals

Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN and seek employment in providing direct nursing care to individuals with commonly occurring health problems within a structured healthcare setting. The practical nurse functions under the direction of the registered nurse, physician, health care provider, or dentist. The nursing program provides the administrative, technical, clinical, and ethical training necessary to pursue a nursing career in a variety of settings:

• Hospitals
• Private physician and counseling practices
• Nursing facilities
• Community clinics and agencies

If you are concerned about being able to make required scores and you would like to "brush up" on some of your skills prior to the pre-entrance exam, the Collins Career Technical Center's Aspire program is available for tutoring services Monday - Thursday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Call (740) 867-6641 Ext. 442 to get set up!

Individuals with a passing score on all parts of the pre-entrance examination will be mailed an application packet for admission.

Clinical Sites

Our students have combined clinical experiences in both long-term care facilities and major medical centers throughout the tri-state area.

Clinical Obligations

Students complete 58 hours of Nursing Principles clinical in Term 2 and 8 hours of observation in Mental Health Nursing. During Term 3, students complete 137 Medical Surgical Nursing hours and 8 hours of Pediatric clinical. Sixteen clinical hours of Maternity Nursing and 56 hours of Preceptorship are required in Term 4.
