Program Overview

The Collins Career Technical Center in Ohio offers a Practical Nursing program for individuals interested in becoming licensed practical nurses (LPN). This program prepares students to provide primary patient care in various healthcare settings under the supervision of registered nurses or other healthcare professionals. The curriculum covers topics such as anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing fundamentals, and patient care, as well as hands-on training in a clinical setting. The program is full-time and typically takes 11 months to complete. Upon completing the program, students can take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to become licensed practical nurses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for a licensed practical was $46,240 in May 2020. Job growth for LPNs is projected to be much faster than average for all occupations.

What do Practical Nurses do?

  • Administer basic patient care, including changing bandages and inserting catheters
  • Provide for the basic comfort of patients, such as helping them bathe or dress
  • Discuss the care they are providing with patients and listen to their concerns
  • Report patients’ status and concerns to registered nurses and doctors
  • Keep records on patients’ health
